Enteritis caused by radiation therapy
Enteritis caused by radiation therapy is an inflammation of the intestines that develops during radiation therapy
The condition causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach spasms in patients undergoing bulk therapy in the abdominal, pelvic, and rectal areas. The disease is most common in patients receiving radiation therapy to treat cancer that originated in the abdomen or pelvis
In most cases, enteritis caused by radiation therapy is temporary and the inflammation will resolve within a few weeks after treatment. However, in some cases the condition persists long after the end of treatment and sometimes may develop months or even years after therapy
Chronic enteritis caused by radiation therapy causes complications such as anemia and partial bowel obstruction.
Treatment is mainly aimed at relieving symptoms before the inflammation resolves In severe cases, feeding through a tube and surgery to remove certain segments of the intestines may be necessary
